Psychic Readings by Kathleen

I uploaded videos of my past media interviews these past two weeks to youtube and google video which triggered a storm of controversy from a group who refer to themselves as Tarot gamers.

Their outrage was directed to my CKCO and Rogers interviews in particular whereby they insist the Tarot was not in fact created for divination but for card games.  I don’t happen to share their opinion.  Tarot was used for games and still is in Quebec, Europe and the US but it wasn’t created for that purpose.  Anyone who has made a serious study of the Tarot will agree with me that the Tarot is anything but a simple depiction of numbers.

It’s always important to remember, (101 academic feminist discourse) that his-story was written by the male dominated economic, political and religious aristocracy. The dominance of literacy in the west is less than a 100 years old.  In most other parts of the world today it remains sadly a class privilege.  Books weren’t even mass produced until the advent of the Guttenberg Press which was created to disseminate the Christian bible.

I contend that it was the political elites in response to a cart blanche rejection of the Tarot on the part of the religious autocracy who quickly moved to identify the Tarot as, “only a game!”  Even today when we hear people insist on the gaming origins of the Tarot we are listening to someone who staunchly adheres to this defensive position.

The her-story of the Tarot is rich with an ancient oral tradition that we can only conjecture by studying the perennial story lines that permeate all proposed origins.  The tarot is introduced to powerful families who immediately glam onto its obvious spiritual significance and have the resources to commission an artist to paint a deck and further to have it reproduced.  These wealthy families typically had their kindred painted in the faces of the Tarot’s characters.  When the religious establishment discover this pictorial book making its way throughout the elite classes they ban it and condemn its adherents.  These adherents flee the area with their picture book in hand to seek asylum in a different community where again it makes its way into aristocratic hands…

Most tarotists will agree that the origins of the tarot can be sourced from the east.  When and where remains a mystery.  I can say that after studying the tarot for thirty years that its complexity and mystery certainly invalidate the notion that this fascinating, spiritual, and wise picture book was originally created for a trump game. It is even unlikely that it was created by an individual. If so, their genius would certainly have rivaled Shakespeare, Da Vinci, and Hawkins all rolled into one!

Tarot Certification Classes

The final Intermediate class is this coming Thursday and I’m now compiling a new list for students interested in studying the Tarot.  If you wish to be on this list just press the reply to this ezine with the request to be put on the perspective student list.  As soon as I have enough students to run a class I’ll send you an email with the details re registration information, location and times for the class.

Quote:

“One school of thought, for example, suggests that the name Tarot may have been taken from the name Tara, which is found in several mythic traditions.  A Hindu myth tells of the liaison between Soma (the god of ecstasy) and Tara, the wife of another god; out of this union, Buddha (Wisdom) was born.  Another Tara, consort of the enlightened Avalokitesvara, is revered in Tibetan Tantrism as one of its great Matrika-devis, or mother goddesses.  The same sound is found in the Roman word terra, meaning earth, and the appellation Terra Mater (Earth Mother) was applied to the Roman goddess Tellus.”
